Spotlight Oak Bay Brewery

🍻Tucked away on Main Street, Oak Bay Brewery is truly a hidden gem created by owner Brian Poulin. What makes this brewery special is how Brian combined two important parts of his life—his love for craft beer and his background in engineering and technology—to create something truly unique.

Brian purchased the building in 2021, but the space needed significant work. What followed was an extensive 26-month renovation where the entire building was redesigned from the ground up. The interior was completely rebuilt, including updated bathrooms, brewing areas, and gathering spaces. The result today is a warm, inviting brewery that feels both modern and welcoming.

One of the most fascinating parts of Oak Bay Brewery is the brewing technology Brian installed. Drawing from his engineering and tech company experience, he carefully designed a brewing system that focuses on sustainability and freshness. The brewing tanks, imported from Holland, use an innovative system that moves the beer from the tank to the tap using air pressure rather than traditional COâ‚‚. This process keeps the beer exceptionally fresh while also reducing environmental impact.

The system is incredibly efficient. The beer is pushed from a pressurized system inside the tank, meaning the beer never actually touches the inside of the tank itself. Each time beer is poured, pressure pushes it directly to the tap, preserving freshness and flavor. When the part that holds the beer is depleted, a new one is inserted. Because of this design, there is no need for traditional cleaning systems that generate large amounts of wastewater. There is no CIP waste, no unnecessary water disposal, and even the cooling system is built directly into the tank itself, eliminating the need for large walk-in coolers. It’s a thoughtful and environmentally friendly approach that reflects Brian’s engineering mindset.

Of course, the technology would mean nothing without great beer—and Oak Bay delivers. Brian brews his beer right on site, creating fresh, creative options that are light, refreshing, and full of flavor. The beers are approachable while still unique, with locally inspired ingredients and creative recipes. I personally tried the Normale and the Irish Blonde Ale—both were incredibly fresh, crisp, and refreshing.

But Oak Bay Brewery is about more than great beer. Brian strongly believes that when businesses on Main Street support one another, the entire community benefits. His philosophy is simple: when one business thrives, it helps lift all the others.

To bring that idea to life, Brian has created fun community events that encourage people to explore the entire Main Street area. One of the most popular is the Main Street scavenger hunt that takes place each month since January, which invites participants to visit multiple locations—including breweries, bars, and wine spots along the street. Currently The Shamrock Shakedown! It’s a creative way to bring people together while supporting local businesses.

Next month, the scavenger hunt will take on a new twist with a murder mystery theme, adding an extra level of excitement and creativity to the experience. These events help turn Main Street into a lively destination where people can gather, explore, and enjoy everything the area has to offer.

Oak Bay Brewery itself is also a wonderful place to spend time. It feels private and that you’re stepping into a different world, that’s part of its charm. The space includes a beautiful courtyard area and plenty of room to relax with friends, making it a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere for everyone they have games and events for the whole family.

Brian’s creativity, technical expertise, and passion for community have helped turn Oak Bay Brewery into something special. By bringing together engineering innovation, craft brewing, and a commitment to supporting other local businesses, he has created not just a brewery—but a place where people can connect, explore, and celebrate everything that makes Main Street unique.

If you haven’t discovered Oak Bay Brewery yet, it’s definitely worth seeking out this hidden gem on Main Street. 🍻
